In 1944, Camp Westerbork was a transit camp in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands, serving as the primary holding and deportation center for Dutch Jews and others being sent to extermination camps further east. While conditions were not as brutal as in extermination camps, inmates lived in constant fear of the weekly transports that determined their fate.

The weekly deportation transports, which had run since July 1942, continued throughout 1944. The last major train left the camp on September 13, 1944, as Allied forces approached.
