Origins: Raised on October 14, 1661, specifically to garrison Tangier in North Africa, which had been acquired by King Charles II as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza.

Nicknames: Most famously known as "Kirke’s Lambs" (after early colonel Percy Kirke) and the "Mutton Lancers", derived from the Paschal Lamb on the regimental crest.

Early Modern: Battle of Sedgemoor (1685), Battle of the Boyne (1690), and the War of the Spanish Succession.

Napoleonic Wars: Served with distinction in the Peninsular War and at the Battle of Alexandria (1801).

World War I: Raised 25 battalions; saw intense action on the Western Front, in Italy, Gallipoli, and Mesopotamia.

World War II: Fought in North Africa, Italy, Burma (with the Chindits), and North-West Europe.
