The Royal Tank Regiment (RTR) is the oldest tank unit in the world and an armoured regiment of the British Army, specializing in mounted close combat and "shock action". It originated as the Heavy Branch of the Machine Gun Corps in 1916 and was granted the "Royal" prefix in 1923, becoming the Royal Tank Corps. In 1939, it was renamed the Royal Tank Regiment and placed under the newly formed Royal Armoured Corps.
