The British 1821 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer's Sabre with a pipe-back blade was officially adopted in 1822 and was a significant departure from earlier swords, featuring a steel three-bar hilt and a slightly curved, single-edged pipe-back blade. While effective in its time, the pipe-back blade was later found to be unsatisfactory for both cutting and thrusting, leading to its replacement with a fullered "Wilkinson" style blade in 1845. Both types of blades saw action, as many officers kept their older swords for years after the update
